Company History and Technology

Part one of the FAQ; who are we, what do we do and how does it work - the short story!

Who is ECOsmarte?

ECOsmarte has sold the best non-salt, non-chemical water technology since 1994 with over 15,000 customers in 46 countries and all 50 US states. ECOsmarte is based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, with dealers and distributors throughout the US and all over the world. Larry Couture is our CEO and founder, and a significant driving force in the company; he believes so passionately in ECOsmarte that it's hard to find him talking about anything else!

Exactly what do you manufacture?

  1. Chlorine and salt-free pool/spa sanitization systems.
  2. Whole house point of entry water purification and conditioning systems for well and municipal water that are completely chemical and salt-free.
  3. There are many commercial applications of our technology including plant nurseries, cooling towers, golf courses, wineries, landscape water features, fountains, koi ponds, car washes, water misters (agricultural and commercial), hair salons,  and flower shops; basically, anywhere you want chlorine-free, pure water with no hard water scaling.

What is your technology and how does it work?

ECOsmarte technology involves copper ionization and electronic oxidation.

  1. Copper ions are created in the ECOsmarte chamber by low voltage traveling between the copper electrodes, resulting in copper ions being released into your water. Copper ions are very effective at killing algae, germs, bacteria and viruses, and they stay active for 7-10 days. The charged ions also transform the minerals in the water to a softer state, so they will not precipitate out unless heated above 150 degrees. So whether it's your pool water or the water you drink, the copper ions kill the bad stuff and prevent hard water scaling.
  2. Oxidation is created by the titanium elctrodes, which will eliminate organic contaminants. The oxidation produced in our chamber is exponentially more powerful than Chlorine and produces none of the toxic by-products.

Where did this technology come from?

Copper ionization was first developed by NASA in 1967 for the space program, enabling them to have pure, clean water without hard water scaling - critical requirements for the sensitive machinery.
