Copper ionization systems have been sold since 1988 when Honeywell in Mpls released them after their NASA financed patents expired. Over 100 manufacturers make and have made ionization for swimming pools and MOST of them never learned how to operate the pool and 99 per cent of them required chlorine to oxidize the organics.
1) Ionization is completely incompatible with a cartridge filter, unless you want to thoroughly clean it every week which is highly problematic.
2) Silver in an ionizer will stain the pool, silver oxide forms at the water line as sunlight creates this "photographic reaction".
Use of chlorine with an ionizer that contains silver will result in Silver Chloride stains, reasonably permanent on either vinyl or plaster pools.
3) Chlorine has bleached or stained more pools than all of the ionizers combined, and may soon be exceeded by the swimming pool industry's favorite item-- salt to chlorine generators.
4) Ionizers are completely incompatible with chlorine, a guaranteed stain results.
5) Ionizers require less running hours than conventional chlorine or salt to chlorine pools and NO CYANURIC stabilizer or extra running hours are required in the high heat months as with chlorine.
6) Chlorine kills no microbe above 7.8ph or above 90 degrees Fahrenheit water temperature.
7) Copper kills no microbe above 7.5 pH AND ITS KILL RATE INCREASES AS THE WATER TEMPERATURE INCREASES. THE RESIDUAL DOES NOT EVAPORATE AS WITH CHLORINE.
8) I WOULD AVOID THE "GARAGE BUILDERS"--these folks will not put an address or any dealers in the industry on their website . Find a manufacturer who offers toll free support if you are considering an alternative sanitizer. We can run pools without ever using chlorine. Chemicals to treat chemicals, story after story. Give ECOsmarte eleven minutes per week and your pool will be crystal clear with proper pump and filter equipment and an automatic vacuum.
I think someone is afraid of being put out of business, I know Arch Chemicals sends a PHD to all the teaching seminars we lead. As consumers become educated, and are demanding products from the POOL INDUSTRY-- the great part is the pool is also cheaper to run-- $500 to $750 per year less than chlorine.
For the record also, the ECOsmarte systems were installed on the Athens Olympic Lake, not on the competition pools and we were not under final consideration in Bejing, Only preliminary consideration, as one of the Chinese Olympic Committee members has a son that is an ECOsmarte customer. We have been unwilling to sell to or buy from China-- our products are 100 per cent made in the Midwest.
